Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Winless Streak with Dominant ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "imposed pressure on himself" to deliver a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today's event," he stated.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by claiming victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, which he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, achieved a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not lead the Warm Up session, which was dampened by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race press conference. "We dominated every session, except for the Warm Up, where I chose, along with the team, to remain in the garage," he explained.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had built up over the nearly three years he hadn't won a race and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, and it was challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, securing this victory felt amazing. Right away, my thoughts went to the entire journey we've been through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team offering me a chance. As a novice rider, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, which allowed him to ponder various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful; it's always a celebration with them."
"In addition, the most important factor was the support of those around me. During extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate and caring team, who were even more affected by the situation than I was, truly made a difference."
"The celebration felt unusual since, in past races, the excitement levels were higher even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling emotional rather than being fueled by adrenaline."
After leading in every session except the wet Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to cap off his weekend.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he mentioned. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, showing consistency and intelligence; however, you're the same person, and without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders."
Marquez sees this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his return to success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on par with my performance in Germany in 2021."
“When dealing with numerous injuries and a particularly challenging period, the significance of each win becomes greater.”
"Although I’ve secured 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my first in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way, providing an extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Márquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is within reach." He continued, "It became clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts for that goal."
“However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come eventually.”
