Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend Victory
Marc Marquez admitted to "pushing himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I understood the significance of today," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, celebrating a triumph he labeled as "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed impressively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not lead the Warm Up session, which was affected by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, because he did not complete a lap.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the press conference after the race. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I honestly chose with the team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the intense feelings he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the immense relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top-tier class.
"In the race, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, and keeping emotions in check during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning felt unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on everything we went through, the support of everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant support, with the Gresini team in particular giving me a chance. I entered as a newcomer, gave my all, and we succeeded. Now, we've set a new goal and are continuing forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about making it to the podium," he commented. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's like a constant celebration over there."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from the people around me. In extremely challenging times, if you lack a compassionate and kind-hearted team who are even more affected by the situation than I am, it truly makes a significant difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because in other races, the adrenaline was much higher, even when finishing second or third. Today's emotions were more about feeling than excitement."
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix, especially after dominating every session except the rain-soaked Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt the weight of expectations today," he remarked. "As you could see from the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today was and the significant chance I had ahead of me."
"Because of that, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, maintaining consistency and showing intelligence; but you're the same person. Without the speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a tough period, the significance of the wins changes."
While it's accurate that I've secured 60 wins, the two most recent victories, along with my initial triumph in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. These wins offer a unique boost to my confidence, providing an extra layer of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I remained highly focused to avoid any errors."
Even though Marquez had participated in 12 race weekends with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the end of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his belief that a race victory is imminent. He acknowledged that opportunities to win will present themselves. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it happened."
