Lewis Hamilton Edges Out Carlos Sainz in Thrilling Second Practice at Spanish GP
Lewis Hamilton leads the close second practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, surpassing Carlos Sainz.
In Friday's practice session in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton demonstrated the speed of his Mercedes, finishing with the fastest time.
Lewis Hamilton narrowly outperformed Carlos Sainz to lead the second practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix, which saw very close competition.
The seven-time world champion demonstrated impressive speed with his Mercedes on soft tyres, clocking the fastest time of 1 minute and 13.264 seconds at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Friday.
Hamilton managed to secure the fastest time, edging out Ferrari's Sainz by a mere 0.022 seconds. Lando Norris, who had led the first practice session, was close behind, finishing in third place with his McLaren, just 0.055 seconds off the pace.
Pierre Gasly delivered an unexpected performance by securing fourth place for Alpine, trailing Hamilton's fastest time in the second practice session by 0.179 seconds.
Current world champion Max Verstappen recorded the fifth-fastest time, trailing by 0.240 seconds, while voicing concerns about the handling and balance of his RB20 car.
Charles Leclerc secured the sixth position driving the second Ferrari, followed by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in seventh. Mercedes’ George Russell took eighth place, with Esteban Ocon of Alpine in ninth and Valtteri Bottas rounding out the top ten for Sauber.
Sergio Perez, currently facing a three-place grid penalty for the Barcelona race and experiencing a downturn in performance, managed to secure only the 13th-fastest time on soft tyres, trailing his Red Bull teammate Verstappen by more than half a second.
The fastest 16 drivers all completed their laps within one second of Hamilton's leading time.
