Leclerc Downplays Tensions with Sainz After ‘Clear the Air’ Talks Following Spanish GP Overtake Incident
Charles Leclerc says he’s “not concerned” about his relationship with Carlos Sainz after having discussions to resolve any issues post-Spanish Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc is not worried that his rapport with Ferrari Formula 1 teammate Carlos Sainz has been affected following their incident at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Leclerc was furious with Sainz after he executed a bold overtake early in the race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Leclerc believed that Sainz had broken their pre-race agreement by not conserving his tyres and making a pass during the race.
Sainz responded to Leclerc, accusing his junior teammate of 'whining excessively'.
Prior to the Austrian Grand Prix, Leclerc disclosed that they had a candid discussion to resolve any issues during their return journey from the previous race.
”Not in the slightest. We even flew back together on the same plane Sunday night,” he mentioned during the FIA press conference at the Red Bull Ring before the weekend.
"We met up and everything was fine. We had a conversation like we always do."
"From an outside perspective, the problem often appears significant, but having known each other for so long, we understand that there will be tension after the race."
Leclerc believes that the "tension" between him and Sainz was blown out of proportion because it happened immediately after the race when emotions were running high.
"We both feel upset with each other right now, but we talk things out and everything turns out fine. I'm not concerned about our relationship in the future," he said.
"The race was more intense compared to previous ones. This might not be the last time, but we've always resolved it by talking things out, and then everything goes smoothly. It's the same situation now, so I'm not concerned."
Leclerc is not worried that Sainz leaving at the end of the season will lead to more situations similar to the one in Barcelona.
"We've been cooperating exceptionally well. I believe the question stems from the events of the previous race," he continued. "However, in the past, we've also encountered challenging situations between teammates, especially when we're in close competition. These moments are inevitable, and it's crucial to address them directly afterwards. Carlos and I have consistently managed to handle these situations very effectively."
"I have no concerns about moving ahead, and frankly, I haven't noticed any differences because of that. Ultimately, we are professionals, and we understand that maintaining a positive relationship within the team is beneficial for everyone. It's important for us to work together effectively."
"Occasionally, I'll exceed the boundaries, and sometimes Carlos will do the same. When that happens, we discuss the situation and recalibrate. I'm confident that we'll continue to handle things this way in the future."
