Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Yet Enough to Secure Consistent Wins in 2024 Season
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari’s recent improvements won’t be sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. "Is it enough to win races from now until the end of the season? I don't believe so yet, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance if they want to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season, using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's dominance as the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major improvement package for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution".
"We need to be careful," he stated. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that time. Monza is another track with its own unique characteristics."
"There were a lot of straight sections and not many turns on this track. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this course, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think this improvement will make us the leading car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"We still have plenty to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have secured one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the anticipation, pointing out that there were similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but the conditions in Baku could be quite different, and the situation in Singapore will also likely vary. Therefore, we need to adjust our approach. We made the necessary adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, and as evidenced, there was a significant shift in our performance from one weekend to the next."
"We experienced some of the toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out our car's issues. Hopefully, we won't face several more challenging races ahead, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and the external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season? Not quite yet, but we have definitely moved in the right direction."
