Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Upgrades Not Enough for 2024 Season Victory Run
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for securing victories through the remainder of the season.
"Is it sufficient to secure race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so just yet, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outperform McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, which underscored McLaren's superior speed at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the race at Monza, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
“We need to be careful,” he stated. “Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco was uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a very distinctive and unique circuit.
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a rear wing designed specifically for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance. However, I don't think it's sufficient for us to be the leading car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this here in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
Likewise in the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, pointing to the comparable discussion of a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
“This weekend we performed exceptionally well, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, and Singapore will likely be distinct as well. Therefore, we need to start fresh. We successfully managed a reset between Monaco and Montreal, but as evidenced by the significant shift from one weekend to the next, the transition was substantial.”
"We then experienced three or four of our toughest races of the season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of challenging races like that, and I believe that won't happen."
“However, it’s crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don’t escalate unrealistically from one race to the next.”
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
