Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Recent Upgrades Not Enough for 2024 Championship Charge
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari's recent improvements are insufficient to secure victories for the remainder of the season. He acknowledged, "While it isn't enough to consistently win races from now until the end of the season, we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must improve their performance to consistently compete with McLaren for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, allowing him to triumph over McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren boasted the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix aimed at resolving their issues with car bouncing.
In the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc has advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to exercise caution," he stated. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car at that moment. Monza, too, is a very distinct and unique circuit."
"A lot of straight sections with few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we introduced another upgrade that I believe narrowed the gap with McLaren. However, I don't think it will make our car the one to beat on other tracks for the remainder of the season."
"I believe there's still much to be accomplished, but I'm genuinely pleased to have secured one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced difficulties since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has minimized the high hopes, pointing out that there was similar speculation about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed excellently this weekend, but Baku could present a completely different challenge, as could Singapore. Therefore, we need to continually recalibrate our approach. We made necessary adjustments when transitioning from Monaco to Montreal, but the shift between those two weekends was indeed significant."
"We experienced some of the toughest races of the season, about three or four in total, as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. I hope we don't have to endure more challenging races moving forward, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it is crucial that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and do not escalate unrealistically from one race to the next."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races consistently for the rest of the season? Not quite yet, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
