Leclerc Cautions Ferrari Fans: Monza Upgrade Not Enough for Season-Long Dominance
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's recent improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races for the rest of the season’
"Is it adequate to secure victories for the remainder of the season? I believe not yet, but we have made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by employing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, emphasizing that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with car bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he remarked. "Following the Monaco race, I believe we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, largely because Monaco's track suited our car's characteristics at that moment. Similarly, Monza is a unique and specialized circuit."
"There were many straight sections and few curves. We also had a rear wing designed specifically for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren, but I don't think it will make us the dominant car for the remainder of the season on other tracks."
"We still have much to accomplish, but I'm truly pleased to have won one here in Italy."
Although Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referring to similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We performed exceptionally well this weekend, but Baku might present a completely different challenge, and Singapore could be different yet again. So, we need to recalibrate our approach. We already made adjustments from Monaco to Montreal, and as observed, the transition between those two weekends was significantly dramatic."
"We then experienced three or four of the toughest races this season as we tried to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of challenging races moving forward, and I believe that won't be the case."
"However, it's crucial to ensure that both the team and external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that wouldn't be realistic."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Is it sufficient to secure victories for the rest of the season? Not quite, but we're definitely moving in the right direction."
