Kevin Magnussen Reflects on ‘Empty’ F1 Career, Hints at New Horizons Beyond 2024
Kevin Magnussen describes his career as "lacking in some aspects" and suggests he might pursue opportunities beyond Formula 1 in 2025.
Kevin Magnussen has suggested he might be looking into opportunities beyond Formula 1, describing his time in the top tier of racing as "unfulfilling in certain aspects."
Magnussen's contract will expire at the end of the season, and it is unlikely that he will continue with Haas.
The American team is anticipated to secure Oliver Bearman for the upcoming year, with Esteban Ocon allegedly being the top candidate to head the team in 2025.
As a result, Magnussen will not have a seat for the next season, and with few alternatives available, this is probably his last year in Formula 1.
This is not the first occasion when Magnussen will be absent from Formula 1, as he was previously replaced at McLaren for the 2025 season.
In a similar turn of events, Magnussen did not compete in the 2021 season after being released by Haas, but he was brought back a year later to replace Nikita Mazepin.
Magnussen believes he is a "key player" in the driver market but has hinted that other motorsport categories could potentially address the "void" he experiences.
He mentioned to certain media outlets, including Crash.net in Austria, "I am actively involved and in the running for a few positions. I believe that's wonderful, and everything is quite transparent right now. I think the experienced individuals have strong prospects of securing a position regardless."
"Being a part of this journey after so many years here must be quite rewarding. However, it's also been a lengthy path. I've spent nearly every season in Formula 1 competing in the midfield, and now at 31, I'm beginning to reflect on my career. If I were to conclude my motorsport journey having only competed in the midfield of F1, it might feel somewhat unfulfilling in certain aspects."
"I sometimes watch races like Le Mans and the Indy 500, and the winners look incredibly happy. I feel fortunate that there's a world outside of Formula 1 that I've experienced a few times when I wasn't competing in it. It's a great life, and I find it quite appealing."
Magnussen has primarily competed in the middle positions during his F1 career.
In his debut race for McLaren in 2014, he achieved his first and only podium finish, and he stunned everyone by taking pole position for Haas in 2022.
Magnussen admitted that Formula 1 might be 'showing its age' as he is unable to compete at the forefront.
"When I contemplate my future, I don't think that not being in Formula 1 would make my life terrible," he said. "In fact, I sometimes feel the opposite. Being part of Formula 1 comes with significant sacrifices. With 24 races and the demands of being a family man, it's a substantial burden. It's not just the races themselves; there's a lot more involved that consumes your entire year, making it challenging to focus on anything else."
"I have a deep passion for many things, particularly in motorsports, but also beyond that realm. My lifelong dream has been to achieve success in Formula 1, to clinch race victories and championship titles. However, after a decade in the sport without reaching those goals, it might be starting to feel a bit tiresome."
