Jorge Martin Weighs in on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon MotoGP Crash Amidst Championship Shakeup
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia's hopes were dashed by a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a rough weekend in terms of points, and Martin mirrored this with two more second-place finishes. Martin has now come in second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia made his way up through the ranks and caught up to Marquez with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the racing line at turn 12. Bagnaia saw an opportunity to capitalize, but both riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to fully commit to any particular stance.
"It's challenging," Martin mentioned. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, which ultimately led to contact."
"I really hope they're alright. After the crash, it looked like they were near the bikes, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next stage of the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. Bagnaia, who competed in the 2023 race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, will again have only one week to recover from the Aragon race before preparing for Misano this year.
Despite Bagnaia having two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who clinched both races in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival’s home event with a 23-point lead in the championship.
