Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's hopes for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing impressive consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia didn't score many points over the weekend, while Martin secured second place in both races, continuing his streak of finishing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia’s eventful weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a rough start, Bagnaia made his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez’s back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the opportunity, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to take a strong stance either way.
Martin commented on the challenges, suggesting that inquiries be directed to Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez for further insights.
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex was unable to lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"I hope they’re alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race despite suffering a leg injury from a crash in the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race in order to compete at Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both races in 2023. This year, the Spaniard heads to his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
