Jorge Martin Reflects on Sprint Crash and Positives Amid Championship Battle
Jorge Martin on Sprint Incident: “I’m Unsure of the Cause of My Crash”
Jorge Martin finds many positives despite what he describes as the 'toughest weekend of the season,' though the championship front-runner remains uncertain about the reason behind his crash during the sprint.
Jorge Martin's 39-point lead going into the Italian MotoGP was reduced to 18 points by Francesco Bagnaia, who secured a double victory on home turf.
Positioned third in the sprint race and seemingly set for an easy podium finish, Martin lost control of the front end of his GP24 bike and crashed out.
On Sunday, Martin secured third place in the grand prix, but the championship frontrunner lost more points after Bastianini passed him in the last corner of the final lap.
This season, Martin has only had two crashes during races, and each time, Bagnaia capitalized on the situation by securing a victory.
Commenting on his fall during the sprint, Martin stated: "I am still unsure about the cause of my crash. These things happen occasionally, and it's not the first time we've witnessed such an incident."
"I experienced this issue in Jerez, and Pecco faced the same problem during the sprint in Montmelo. We need to address this situation because having accidents without understanding the cause undermines your confidence."
Although eliminating accidents is crucial not only for Martin but also for Bagnaia—both of whom have suffered significant point losses from personal mistakes—Martin still left the weekend feeling positive, even though his lead was substantially reduced.
Following a challenging Saturday, Martin and his Pramac Ducati team significantly adjusted his GP24 motorcycle, a move that the Spanish rider typically prefers to avoid.
Martin expressed his satisfaction, explaining that his usual approach is to avoid making adjustments to the bike and instead focus on understanding how to achieve speed. However, from Saturday to Sunday, he had to implement a significant change, which ultimately proved to be beneficial.
"This experience boosted my and my crew chief's confidence in making various adjustments and adapting the bike to different race tracks, while also alleviating our fear of trying new strategies."
"I found many good things about this weekend and you learn valuable lessons from challenging experiences."
"This has been the toughest weekend of the season, and I'm standing on the podium. I'm extremely pleased."
