Joan Mir’s Harrowing Journey at Honda: Physical Pain, Uncertain Future, and the Search for Redemption
Joan Mir reveals his battle with intense physical discomfort and a grim outlook while at Honda, stating, “I’m unsure how much more my body can endure.”
Joan Mir has delivered a harsh critique of his tenure with Honda.
The 2020 MotoGP champion expressed experiencing physical discomfort and highlighted limited prospects for switching teams in the future.
Mir, currently in his sophomore year with Repsol Honda, ranks 18th in the MotoGP rankings.
Last year, he openly talked about the potential of retiring following a season filled with crashes.
Luca Marini, the latest addition to the team, has struggled to adapt to the RC213V and remains the sole regular rider who has not scored any points after participating in five rounds.
Mir was questioned about the duration he is prepared to endure before Honda resolves the challenges he is encountering.
"I'm clueless," he confessed to Motorsport. "I'm saying this and I'm fully sincere.
"I'm uncertain about the duration my physique can endure this situation."
"I doubted I'd come this far, yet here I stand.
"I'm putting my best effort into my work, aiming to lead the pack and deliver strong performances, but it's unrealistic to anticipate miracles."
Mir also emphasized that joining Honda has made many riders less appealing to prospective teams.
Mir observed, "The truth is, those departing from Honda in recent years find themselves performing more poorly than at their point of entry."
This is the truth, and moreover, without any exceptions, everyone departs from Honda in a superior state than when they arrived.
"It's essential to manage this scenario to the best of your ability and attempt to understand my perspective on what actions I'm inclined to take. That's the problem at hand."
Mir's agreement with Honda is set to conclude when this year comes to a close.
Trackhouse, managed by his former leader at Suzuki, Davide Brivio, presents a possibility for 2025.
Motosprint has reported the commencement of discussions between Mir and Trackhouse.
Mir was pessimistic regarding potential opportunities should he decide to leave Honda.
"He expressed his belief that there would be alternatives available, though likely not his preferred choices."
"We continue to push forward, and I firmly believe that with a bike capable of competing, we'll quickly be leading the pack."
This upcoming weekend at the Catalunya MotoGP presents another opportunity for Mir to tackle the issues with his challenging bike.
