Horner Defends Perez as Red Bull Extends Constructors’ Lead Despite Challenging Spanish GP
Christian Horner swiftly came to Sergio Perez's defense, noting, "Didn't we increase our lead today?"
Horner expressed satisfaction that Red Bull strengthened their position in the constructors' championship standings in Barcelona.
Christian Horner swiftly highlighted that Red Bull increased their advantage in the F1 constructors' championship even though Sergio Perez faced challenges at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Perez managed to secure an eighth-place finish in the race held on Sunday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Luckily for Red Bull, Max Verstappen is still excelling, securing his seventh victory of the season.
Overall, McLaren's car was faster on the day of the race, but Verstappen managed to maintain a lead by getting a strong start and making a key pass on George Russell.
Following the race in Barcelona, Red Bull increased their lead in the points standings to 60. When questioned about Perez's recent struggles, Horner highlighted this achievement.
Points earned during the Spanish Grand Prix:
Red Bull – 29
Mercedes – Age 27
McLaren – 25
Ferrari – 18
In a conversation with a few media outlets, including Crash.net, on Sunday, Horner remarked, "If I recall correctly, I believe we increased our lead today?"
Horner stated, "It's crucial for us to have Checo competing at the front. He is aware of this, and so is the team. Being lower in the top eight reduces our strategic choices, like whether to split strategies or not. Checo performed brilliantly in the first four or five races this year; we just need to help him regain that mindset."
Perez faced a challenging weekend due to a three-place grid penalty carried over from the last race.
He adopted a three-pit-stop strategy that enabled him to pass Pierre Gasly of the Alpine team towards the end of the race.
Horner is optimistic that Perez can gain "confidence" from his comeback and earn points.
“He’s encountered a few challenging races recently,” he stated. “Things haven’t really worked out in his favor, and since he’s a driver who thrives on confidence, I hope this performance, where he’s back in the points and drove a solid race, will boost his confidence for the upcoming competitions.”
