Horner Claps Back at Mercedes’ ‘Downgrade’ Dig After Verstappen’s Canadian GP Triumph
Christian Horner responds to Mercedes after James Allison's "downgrade" comment
Christian Horner addresses Mercedes and James Allison's remarks post-Canadian Grand Prix.
Christian Horner has responded to Mercedes after James Allison, the F1 technical director, implied that Red Bull's latest upgrade for the Canadian Grand Prix was actually a step backward.
Max Verstappen secured his third straight victory at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve amidst a turbulent, rain-soaked race.
The Dutch driver may not have had the quickest car, but he outperformed his competitors by making fewer errors, securing his 60th career victory in Formula 1.
This indicated that Red Bull faced difficulties in matching their earlier season's dominant performance.
Consequently, Allison indicated that their most recent advancements led to Red Bull falling behind in the rankings.
Allison commented from Canada, "It seems like their supposed improvement actually made things worse," she clarified. "Let's hope that this seriously disrupts their plans."
"That complicates things, as doubting your tools forces you to retrace your steps, resulting in significant time loss. Time is your greatest ally, and losing it is your biggest adversary."
As expected, Horner responded strongly to Mercedes and Allison.
"Despite our downgrade, we succeeded in outperforming their upgrade," Horner remarked. "Securing victory in this race felt very gratifying."
Red Bull has secured victories in six out of the first nine races this season, with Verstappen holding a strong lead in the championship standings.
Horner anticipates that Red Bull’s competitors will persist as a challenge throughout the remainder of the year.
"The past few races have been more challenging for us, but we've still succeeded in winning two of the last three," Horner mentioned.
"We secured a pole position in Imola and achieved the same pole time here, despite the car's shortcomings that both drivers are experiencing. Efforts are heavily concentrated on addressing these issues to see if improvements can be made."
It is anticipated that tracks later in the season, such as Singapore, might present challenges related to ride issues. However, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes, who showed potential this weekend, are expected to perform well consistently across all circuits.
"Even though we've secured victory in six out of the nine races, we must perform at our absolute best to continue widening the lead."
