Helmut Marko’s ‘Sportsmanship’ Jibe at McLaren: Red Bull’s Unexpected Lift After Italian Grand Prix Drama
Helmut Marko takes a jab at McLaren's sportsmanship during the Italian Grand Prix, saying, "I value that, and it slightly improves our position."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude towards McLaren for their "sportsmanship" after they lost the chance to win the Italian Grand Prix F1 race.
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors' championship.
The Woking team might have topped the leaderboard following the Monza race if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nevertheless, their choice to change to a two-stop plan for Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris ended up being expensive.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the race lead, maintaining his position with a one-stop strategy.
Norris secured third place, which resulted in narrowing Max Verstappen’s advantage in the drivers’ championship by just eight points. Verstappen now leads by 62 points as they head to Azerbaijan.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko rejected the idea that the outcome was "disappointing" and proceeded to ridicule McLaren.
"Was it a disappointing outcome? Absolutely not," he remarked. "We had anticipated this to some extent, and I want to extend my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I’m grateful for that; it improves our circumstances somewhat."
Red Bull experienced a disappointing weekend as Verstappen managed to secure only sixth place.
His sixth-place result marks his poorest performance on the track since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Due to significant challenges faced by Red Bull, their standing in both championship races is at risk, especially with the upcoming events in Baku and Singapore, tracks anticipated to be unfavorable for them.
Encouragingly for Red Bull, there's a one-month break before the series of races in the United States, providing them with valuable time to possibly come up with ways for Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still certain that Verstappen will stand out in 2024.
"Max remains the top driver both mentally and in terms of quality," he stated.
