Helmut Marko Takes a Jab at McLaren’s ‘Sportsmanship’ Following Italian Grand Prix Strategy Blunder
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren with a “sportsmanship” comment during the Italian Grand Prix, stating, “I appreciate that, and it slightly improves our circumstances.”
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude to McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the F1 constructors' championship standings.
The team from Woking might have topped the leaderboard after the Monza race if they had managed to achieve a first and second place finish.
The choice to transition Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a strategy involving two pit stops proved to be an expensive mistake.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to move into the lead of the race, maintaining his position while utilizing a one-stop strategy.
Norris secured third place, cutting down Max Verstappen's lead in the drivers' championship by just eight points, bringing the gap to 62 points as they head into the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko refuted claims that the outcome was "disappointing" and proceeded to ridicule McLaren.
"A letdown? Not at all," he remarked. "We somewhat anticipated this outcome, and I wish to extend my congratulations to Ferrari for their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I’m grateful for that, and it somewhat improves our circumstances."
Red Bull had a tough weekend, as Verstappen managed to secure only a sixth-place finish.
His sixth-place result marks his lowest finish in a race since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Due to Red Bull's significant challenges, their standing in both championships is at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are anticipated to be unfavorable for them.
The positive news for Red Bull is that they have a month-long break before the American series of races. This interval could be vital for them to discover ways to help Verstappen secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will stand out in 2024.
“He’s the most mentally and qualitatively robust driver on the grid,” he stated.
