Helmut Marko Mocks McLaren’s Strategy Blunder at Italian Grand Prix, Boosts Red Bull’s Championship Hopes
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren by commenting on their "sportsmanship" at the Italian Grand Prix.
"I value that, and it slightly improves our circumstances."
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude towards McLaren for their "sportsmanship" after they squandered the chance to win the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors' championship.
The Woking team might have topped the leaderboard after the Monza race if they had achieved a first and second place finish.
Nonetheless, choosing to move Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop strategy proved to be an expensive mistake.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the front position in the race and maintain it, utilizing a single pit stop strategy.
By finishing in third place, Norris managed to cut Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers' championship by just eight points, bringing the gap to 62 points before the Azerbaijan race.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko rejected the idea that it was a "disappointing result" and proceeded to ridicule McLaren.
"A letdown? Absolutely not," he remarked. "We anticipated this to some extent and I would like to extend my congratulations to Ferrari on their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I value that, and it improves our circumstances somewhat."
Red Bull had a tough weekend as Verstappen could only manage to come in sixth place.
Finishing in sixth place marks his poorest race result since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.
Due to Red Bull's significant difficulties, their position in both championships is at risk, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, which are not anticipated to favor their performance.
Positive developments for Red Bull include a one-month break before the American leg of the racing season, offering them valuable time to possibly devise strategies that could help Verstappen secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will be the key factor in 2024.
He stated that Max remains the top driver both mentally and in terms of quality.
