Helmut Marko Mocks McLaren’s ‘Sportsmanship’ After Strategic Blunder at Italian Grand Prix
Helmut Marko takes a dig at McLaren, mentioning "sportsmanship" at the Italian Grand Prix, saying, “I value that, and it somewhat improves our position.”
Helmut Marko humorously expressed his gratitude towards McLaren for their "sportsmanship" following their loss of the Italian Grand Prix F1 race win.
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only eight points in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship.
The team from Woking might have been at the top of the leaderboard following the race in Monza if they had achieved first and second place.
Nevertheless, opting to change Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to a two-stop strategy ended up being an expensive mistake.
This enabled Charles Leclerc to seize the lead in the race and maintain it, utilizing a one-stop strategy.
Norris securing third place resulted in just an eight-point decrease in Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship. Verstappen’s advantage now stands at 62 points as they head to Azerbaijan.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, Marko refuted the idea that the outcome was "disappointing" and took the opportunity to ridicule McLaren.
"Was it a disappointing outcome? Absolutely not," he remarked. "We had an inkling this might happen, and I want to extend my congratulations to Ferrari on their win and express my gratitude to McLaren for their fair play."
"I’m grateful for that, and it slightly improves our circumstances."
Red Bull had a tough weekend as Verstappen could only secure a sixth-place finish.
His sixth-place result is his poorest on-track performance since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Due to Red Bull's significant difficulties, they face risks in both championship standings, especially with the upcoming races in Baku and Singapore where the tracks are not anticipated to be favorable for them.
The positive update for Red Bull is that there is a month-long break before the series of races in the United States, providing them with essential time to possibly discover solutions that could enable Verstappen to secure his fourth world championship this year.
Marko is still sure that Verstappen will stand out and be influential in 2024.
"He also mentioned that Max remains the top driver in the field, both mentally and in terms of quality."
