GM Charges Ahead with Tesla Supercharger Access for EVs, But At a Cost for Adapters
General Motors revealed on Wednesday that it will start distributing adapters compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), allowing owners of its electric vehicles to use over 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations for quick DC charging.
The car manufacturer is taking a cue from Ford and Rivian, who started delivering complimentary adapters to their clients earlier in the year. However, GM intends to bill its buyers $225 for the adapters, stating that they will initially be released in the United States, with a subsequent rollout in Canada within the year. GM pointed out that it is utilizing a variety of suppliers to manufacture the adapters to prevent any potential supply chain disruptions.
General Motors' electric vehicles will be able to use Tesla's Supercharging stations
GM has announced plans to incorporate Superchargers into its existing in-vehicle charging applications. This will enable users to find, monitor, initiate, and pay for charging services directly through the apps. GM states that this integration will provide its customers with the ability to use over 321,800 public DC fast-charging and Level 2 AC charging points across North America. Additionally, there will be various fast-charging locations for long-distance travel, marked jointly with EVgo.
General Motors has declared its intention to switch to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in June 2023, marking this as the second instance where car manufacturers have indicated they will incorporate Tesla's charging ports into their designs. GM has indicated that vehicles rolling out in 2025 will be equipped with these ports. In a similar move, Hyundai has equipped its 2025 Ioniq 5 model with the NACS port.
Upcoming 2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle
GM's introduction of adapters signifies the beginning of their shift from a previously supported charging protocol. In 2011, GM, alongside other car manufacturers, played a pivotal role in creating the Combined Charging Standard (CCS). They also pioneered its implementation by featuring a CCS port in the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, a first for production cars.
GM's introduction of the NACS outlet could open up additional charging options for its users, yet it's not a panacea for all charging challenges. By June 2023, the date of GM's announcement, the number of CCS connections surpassed those of NACS in the U.S. Moreover, Tesla's Supercharger network is often praised for its dependability, but this benefit could only be shared with other electric vehicles if car manufacturers and equipment providers can guarantee compatibility across a diverse range of cars and charging infrastructures.
