George Russell Plans Strategic Patience from P3 at Austrian GP, Avoiding Early Battle with Verstappen and Norris
George Russell intends to "observe and let events unfold" from his third-place starting position. He shares his strategy for the beginning of the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
George Russell mentioned that he doesn’t intend to engage in a battle with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at the beginning of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver secured the third spot on the starting grid for Sunday's race at the Red Bull Ring. He will start behind McLaren's Norris and Red Bull's Verstappen, who claimed a commanding pole position.
In Barcelona last week, Russell had an amazing start, advancing from fourth position and overtaking both Norris and Verstappen to take the lead by the first turn.
However, the British individual has minimized expectations of a recurrence, asserting that he plans to "relax and observe everything as it unfolds" instead.
"I believe it's somewhat tougher here," Russell commented. "It seems like these guys are always quite aggressive. So perhaps this time, it's better to just sit back and observe everything unfold."
“However, I believe that last week I spent too much time fighting with Lando and was too preoccupied with the drivers in front. This ultimately resulted in me losing my position to Lewis and nearly to Charles as well.
"Therefore, in my opinion, the race will be over by tomorrow."
When questioned about Mercedes' prospects in the race, Russell mentioned that he anticipates Verstappen and McLaren will be difficult to catch.
He stated, "It appears that Lando and Oscar have a slight edge in speed compared to us. Clearly, Max is way ahead right now."
"I'm not sure where Oscar finished, but I'm sure that Lewis and I can likely outperform the Ferraris tomorrow and hopefully slow down Oscar's progress."
"However, it's a lengthy race with significant wear and tear, so anything is possible."
