George Russell Endorses FIA Rule Change That Could Accelerate Kimi Antonelli’s F1 Debut
George Russell supports an FIA regulation modification that might allow Kimi Antonelli to make his F1 debut earlier than expected. Russell has shared his thoughts on the new rule, which could see Andrea Kimi Antonelli enter Formula 1 this year.
George Russell has supported the FIA's modification of the rules, which might allow Andrea Kimi Antonelli to debut in Formula 1 in 2024.
The FIA revealed last week that drivers are now eligible to start their F1 careers at the age of 17.
The regulation used to be set at 18, introduced after Max Verstappen's impressive entry into the sport in 2015.
Max Verstappen was only 17 years and 166 days old when he competed for Toro Rosso in the 2015 Australian Grand Prix.
As a consequence of recent changes, Article 13.1.2 in Appendix L of the FIA International Sporting Code has been revised. It now states: "The FIA has the exclusive authority to grant a Super Licence to a driver who is 17 years old if they have shown exceptional skill and maturity in single-seater formula car racing consistently."
This suggests that Antonelli might begin his racing career sooner than anticipated, with rumors circulating that he could compete for Williams this year.
Speculation is high that Antonelli will step up to Formula 1 in 2025, taking over from Lewis Hamilton.
Nonetheless, to acclimate him sooner, a period with Williams this year might be considered, especially given Logan Sargeant's subpar performance.
During a conversation with several media outlets, including Crash.net, at the Spanish Grand Prix, Russell expressed his view that starting an F1 career at the age of 17 “depends on the individual.” He believes Antonelli, similar to Verstappen, will have the necessary skills to achieve this.
"Every driver has their own unique style," he mentioned. "Take Max and Kimi for instance. They both benefit from having excellent support teams; Kimi, in particular, is well-prepared with the Mercedes team and all the testing he undergoes."
"Max was in an advantageous situation because his father was a former Formula 1 driver who understood the requirements to reach that level."
"You witnessed how Ollie Bearman performed in Saudi Arabia; he was put in a challenging situation and handled it excellently. It really varies from person to person, depending on the individual's capabilities."
