George Russell Calls for Caution Despite Mercedes’ Strong Performance in Spain
George Russell advises caution, saying "let's not get carried away" despite Mercedes' strong performance in Spain. The driver is enthusiastic about the team's prospects in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix.
George Russell remains hopeful yet careful regarding Mercedes' prospects of competing at the forefront in this weekend's F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
Mercedes had a successful Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Lewis Hamilton leading the times in the second practice session.
This follows Mercedes' most successful weekend of the year, which took place last time in Canada.
Russell took the pole position and earned Mercedes their first podium finish of the season. Overall, the W15 performed best among all cars in dry weather.
Mercedes appears to be competitive once more in Barcelona, a track that has historically favored the team.
Looking back on Friday in Spain, Russell remarked, “I feel great. The car is handling excellently on this track.
"I need to examine it more thoroughly, but it was fantastic to see Lewis leading the times."
"I felt very powerful using the medium tires. During the extended run in the first practice session, our pace matched that of the fastest competitors."
“Although it's just Friday, we haven't consistently reached the high levels in some time.”
Russell anticipates that Mercedes' competitors will make overnight improvements, leading to a competitive battle at the front.
He mentioned that while they were the fastest during this morning's long run, their low-fuel qualifying pace wasn't as impressive. However, in the afternoon, their qualifying speed appeared to be very strong.
"I'm in high spirits and full of anticipation. We've been striving toward this goal for quite some time."
"We're trying to stay grounded. Lewis performed excellently with an impressive lap during FP2. However, we are aware that Red Bull typically ramps up their performance for qualifying. Max will certainly be competitive. Additionally, the McLarens showed strong pace, and Carlos also demonstrated good speed. Therefore, we anticipate a tough competition."
