Ford Mustang GTD Aims for Nürburgring Record as Pre-Orders Skyrocket, Despite Hefty $325,000 Price Tag
The Ford Mustang GTD is targeting a record at the Nordschleife
Pre-orders already far surpass the planned production numbers…
With an estimated cost of $325,000, the Ford Mustang GTD is the most expensive in its 60-year legacy. Yet, this steep price tag isn't deterring enthusiasts from trying to snag one. Ford reports that in the past 37 days, since the deal was made available in the United States and Canada, they've received over 7,500 applications.
Next up is Europe's turn – and that's in several ways. The application period for a Ford Mustang GTD kicks off in June, coinciding with the European debut of the powerhouse at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Furthermore, Ford aims to tackle a lap on the Nürburgring's North Loop in the last quarter of the year. The objective in the notorious 'Green Hell' is to clock a time below seven minutes. If the Mustang GTD achieves this, it would surpass the Dodge Viper ACR as the fastest American production car on record. However, there are still several tests that need to be conducted before this can happen.
"Extensive trials of the Mustang GTD have been carried out in North America, including on tracks like Sebring International Raceway and Virginia International Raceway," mentions Greg Goodall, the lead programming engineer for the Mustang GTD. "The purpose behind these tests was to refine a vehicle capable of completing a lap at the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes. The forthcoming phase involves moving to European roads and conducting specialized trial runs on the Nürburgring, prior to our planned timed run later this year."
The demand for Ford's GTD is already exceeding the company's production capacity, with registrations surpassing 7,500. However, Ford's production schedule only accounts for 300 to 700 units to be manufactured each year. This supercar's production is only set for the years 2025 and 2026, meaning at most, only 600 to 1,400 vehicles will be available for the extensive list of potential buyers. Even more applicants are expected to join the fray as the application period in Europe has yet to commence, not to mention the anticipated interest from Mexico and the Middle East.
But who is vying for a Mustang worth $325,000? Ford says there are significant ties to auto racing. Approximately 20 percent of applicants have some sort of connection to racing.
With over 800 horsepower, a suspension system derived from the GT3, and a rear-mounted transmission enabling an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution – these are features that have never been seen before in a Mustang. It will be interesting to see just how many purchase requests Ford will receive and whether they will adjust their production plans to meet the potentially high demand.
