Fire Drama at McLaren: Lando Norris Overcomes Stressful Day to Claim Pole in Spain
Lando Norris recounts how a fire at McLaren caused a "stressful day" ahead of pole position
Lando Norris described the impact of a significant fire in McLaren's hospitality area on his day.
Lando Norris acknowledged that a fire in McLaren's hospitality unit added extra stress to his day before he secured pole position at the F1 Spanish Grand Prix.
In the moments leading up to the final practice on Saturday in Barcelona, a flurry of activity erupted as McLaren's motorhome was evacuated due to a fire. Emergency responders and fire fighters arrived promptly to address the situation.
A member of the McLaren team was taken to the hospital as a safety measure, but was released afterward.
Norris delivered an outstanding performance, narrowly edging out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by a mere 0.020 seconds in an exhilarating qualifying session on Saturday afternoon. Following his achievement of securing his second career F1 pole position, the 24-year-old British driver explained how the fire incident influenced his day.
"The most important thing is that everyone is safe and well," Norris mentioned during the FIA press conference. "That's the best outcome from all of this. One individual was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks, but everything is fine otherwise."
The entire team experienced some anxiety, which is always unpleasant. My day turned out to be more stressful than I had hoped. The worst part for me was misplacing my shoes.
"Things have been unusual. I haven't stayed in my usual room, and I haven't been able to relax and unwind like I usually would. I've received numerous offers from people, which has been wonderful."
"Numerous teams, including McLaren, have been incredibly kind in extending their assistance to us, which has been greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, it seems that this help won't be utilized today or tomorrow, and possibly not in the foreseeable future. However, I don't have any information on that at the moment."
McLaren is currently evaluating the extent of the damage to their Team Hub. The facility remained out of service for the remainder of the day, compelling Norris and the team to move and alter their standard preparation routines.
"It's been somewhat chaotic," Norris stated. "I believe I have one or two sets of each item, and it seems they were able to salvage some things. However, some of the items may not be in the best condition or have an unpleasant odor from the fire."
"I usually manage to get a few things done beforehand, like listening to my music, but Oscar often grumbles because I play it very loudly before our sessions. However, I didn't get to do that this time."
"I'm currently in the engineering office while Oscar is stationed in the truck downstairs. I've taken over Zak's office, which has left Zak a little upset, but he's still around."
"To be frank, I've never had any problems and I'm not one to gripe about such matters. Truthfully, I could just relax and hop in the car when required."
"When you get a chance to have a few moments alone, you grab those opportunities because you simply want to unwind and reflect for a bit before heading out to tackle your tasks."
"Today doesn’t affect me much, but maybe tomorrow will have more of an impact. I might miss the peaceful moments I cherish, but it’s not a big deal. I won’t complain about it."
