Ferrari Fined €5000 for Mistakenly Fitting Wrong Tyres on Charles Leclerc’s Car in Canadian GP Practice
Ferrari faces a €5000 fine for an unusual tyre mistake involving Charles Leclerc. The team received the penalty after installing incorrect tyres on Leclerc's car during the second practice session.
Ferrari has received a €5000 fine due to a mistake involving the tires on Charles Leclerc's car during the second practice session at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
During Friday’s second practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, an unusual incident occurred when Leclerc received an unexpected instruction from his Ferrari team to return to the pit.
Leclerc was initially confused and questioned his team for more information, thinking there might be an issue. Ferrari assured him that everything was fine but instructed him to come into the pit regardless.
It was subsequently revealed on the screen that the officials were investigating an incident concerning Leclerc’s Ferrari.
The investigation was initiated because his Ferrari was equipped with intermediate tires prior to the FIA officially announcing that the track conditions were wet.
According to F1's sporting rules, intermediate tires are only permitted during free practice sessions if the race director has officially declared the track to be wet.
The officials concluded that the rules had been violated and imposed a fine of €5000 on Ferrari.
"Their decision stated that they had listened to the team spokesperson and examined video footage."
At the start of the session, vehicle number 16 exited the pit lane equipped with intermediate tires, even though the track had not been officially designated as wet. The car then returned to the pit lane after completing just one lap.
"This violates Article 30.5 l), which allows the use of intermediate or wet weather tires solely after the race director has declared the track to be wet."
Leclerc secured the third-best time during a rain-affected first practice session and later achieved the fourth-fastest time in a short dry period of the second session.
