Ferrari F1 Boss Vasseur Dismisses Leclerc-Sainz Tension Amid Spanish GP Controversy
Frederic Vasseur dismisses the growing tension between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
Frederic Vasseur responds to Charles Leclerc’s assertion that Carlos Sainz caused him to miss out on fourth place in Barcelona.
Frederic Vasseur, the head of the Ferrari F1 team, has brushed off inquiries regarding the rising friction between drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz during the Spanish Grand Prix.
Leclerc and Sainz were observed engaging in a heated conversation following the race in parc ferme.
The driver from Monaco was annoyed by the way Sainz passed him in the initial laps of the race.
Leclerc believed that conserving their tyres, as previously agreed upon before the race, was the right strategy for both drivers. On the other hand, Sainz preferred to push aggressively to take full advantage of his fresh soft tyres.
Following the race, Leclerc took a jab at Sainz, suggesting he was trying to stand out in front of his home crowd. Considering Sainz's current contract status, it’s no shock that he aimed to leave an impression.
In response, Sainz countered by remarking that Leclerc often grumbles excessively. This came after Leclerc hinted over the team radio that their earlier duel had robbed him of vital seconds needed to overtake George Russell in the last lap.
Sharing his perspective on the matter, Vasseur explained to a group of journalists, including representatives from Crash.net in Barcelona: “I believe there are numerous instances during the race where we lost fractions of a second.”
“Just a moment, my apologies, or individuals who came afterwards when Carlos allowed them to pass effortlessly later on.
"We lost a few tenths of a second over two or three laps. It's important to have a discussion and not make a decision based on the driver's first comment after getting out of the car."
Ferrari experienced a letdown throughout the weekend in Barcelona, ending up as only the third-fastest team even though they introduced a new upgrade for the event.
Although the on-track speed hasn't been exceptional, Vasseur is pleased with the advancements that are being achieved.
"Yes, we're pleased with the figures we have," he stated. "Firstly, everyone is making progress. This implies that introducing something new won't necessarily propel you ahead, but failing to innovate will certainly set you back."
"Now, everyone is contributing components, typically for two or three events each. Occasionally, you might see the list of what we're releasing, but it mainly focuses on the aerodynamics. Remember, our development isn't limited to just aerodynamics."
"Occasionally, it might take one or two events beforehand to fully optimize our package's performance. Over the past year, we have seen a gradual alignment in our performance."
