Ferrari Abandons Recent F1 Upgrade Amid Persistent Performance Issues at British Grand Prix
Ferrari has abandoned their latest Formula 1 upgrade in an effort to address their issues at the upcoming British Grand Prix.
Ferrari has decided to return to their Imola setup, discarding the recent enhancements they implemented in Barcelona, as Carlos Sainz revealed following the qualifying session for the F1 British Grand Prix.
Since implementing major enhancements in Spain last month, Ferrari has regressed.
Their issues with bouncing at high speeds have resurfaced, causing a decline in their ranking.
In recent races, Ferrari has consistently been the fourth quickest team in Formula 1, while Mercedes has shown a strong comeback.
At Silverstone, a similar situation unfolded where Sainz was bested in qualifying by Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg, and Charles Leclerc didn't make it past Q2.
While addressing the press at the Silverstone paddock, with Crash.net in attendance, Sainz discussed the choice to return to an earlier version.
Carlos Sainz clarified that the adjustments didn't enhance the car's performance but improved its consistency at high speeds. He noted that with reduced bouncing on the floor, the vehicle's behavior becomes more predictable. The goal is to make the car as reliable as possible at high speeds, even though these changes neither advance nor regress its overall performance.
Sainz explained that the choice to return to the previous upgrade was straightforward because the new upgrade caused too much bouncing in the fast corners at Silverstone.
"Indeed, just like that. Since the start of the year, we've experienced some fluctuations, indicating an inherent weakness," he mentioned.
"However, the latest version performed noticeably poorer than the previous model at Silverstone, in my opinion."
Leclerc also spoke about Ferrari's modifications to their setup during the qualifying session.
He stated, "The primary reason we reverted to the previous setup is that it showed some improvement."
The driver from Monaco, who was trailing Max Verstappen by 40 points after his victory in his home country, is optimistic that Ferrari will make the correct choices to enhance their performance in the future.
"We've definitely experienced a drop in performance since Monaco, and we're investigating it. That's also the reason for conducting all these tests," he remarked.
"We determined that returning for this weekend was the best option, primarily due to the issue of bouncing. We will make a final decision about the future shortly. What we accomplished yesterday was instrumental in guiding us to make the right choice moving forward."
