Fernando Alonso Shuts Down Adrian Newey Rumor, Calls for Team Effort Amid Aston Martin Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso regarding Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues will require more than the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his next team has intensified lately, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, "There are still only speculations, and I believe it's not a task for just one person to resolve."
"It's really about assessing our current situation and production. We need to identify what's working well and what isn't, and then strategize to improve things for 2025."
Newey being available next year could enable him to supervise the 2026 vehicle for a different team, potentially providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress before Aston Martin makes a significant push in 2026.
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re dependent on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best effort every weekend.”
"During an inspired weekend like this, I am certain my involvement will remain entirely unnoticed."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I managed to perform a bit better. I felt satisfied with the car and pushed it to its limits, maybe even beyond what was expected, which resulted in finishing in P11."
"Therefore, it's clear we are feeling let down. It's important to remain patient and recognize that our main objective lies in 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being positioned behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull indicates that we need to elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe there is still time for us to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the first four races, we were on par with them, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying, "I believe this is the best we can do with the current car, and it's simply not satisfactory."
"Performance in Monza wasn't satisfactory. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also below par."
“I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won’t be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin.”
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we remain united. We continue to strive forward. Last weekend we secured one point. Today, we were on the verge of getting two points, and that's the challenge we'll face."
