Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Excuses’
Fernando Alonso Addresses “Rumour” About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
Fernando Alonso on Aston Martin’s Troubles: “I Don’t Like Making Excuses”
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin’s issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey’s involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the next few days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, plans to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Recent rumors suggesting that he might join Aston Martin have intensified, while speculation about a potential move to Ferrari has diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, "For now, it's just hearsay, and I believe it's not just one person's responsibility to address the issues."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and our ongoing projects. We need to identify what's progressing well and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into establishing a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that extends through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have not been very promising.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured an 11th-place finish, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin as they prepare to mount a serious challenge in
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We're relying on our team, and both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend."
"A weekend like this, full of inspiration on my end, I know will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have consistently finished races very close to each other, often just two or three seconds apart, whether he was ahead or behind. This weekend, I performed slightly better, felt satisfied with the car, and pushed myself possibly beyond my limit, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that the main goal is 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull signals that we need to improve. We must elevate our performance."
Regarding the vehicle for the upcoming year, Alonso commented, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from last place to standing on the podium in just four months, showing clear progress."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We matched their performance in the first four races, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will see any progress in the upcoming rounds.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that without improvements to the car, the current performance is inadequate.
"Fell short in Monza. Disappointing in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't anticipate any major differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. Therefore, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
