Fernando Alonso Dismisses Rumors of Adrian Newey Fixing Aston Martin’s Woes Amid Struggles and Uncertain Future
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," states Fernando Alonso amid Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin may reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, will leave his position early next year and will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers suggesting that Aston Martin could be his future team have intensified lately, while speculation about a potential move to Ferrari has diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, "Right now, it's just speculation, and I believe it's not a task for just one individual to resolve."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what isn't, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, which might provide them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a new Silverstone facility and secured a contract with Alonso that extends until the end of 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured the 11th spot at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do about it," Alonso responded. "We’re relying on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, similar to this one from my perspective, I’m certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often finished races within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend, I had a slight edge. I felt confident with the car and pushed it possibly beyond its limits, achieving an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top four position. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from finishing last to earning a podium spot within a four-month period, providing a clear example.”
"Similarly, Mercedes had the same beginning as we did. We were evenly matched with Mercedes during the first four races, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, saying that the current performance of the car won't improve until it gets an upgrade, and that the current state is unsatisfactory.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It was also subpar in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I don't believe there will be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"This is our strategy. The team knows what's going on and is giving their all. We stay together and continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that’s the challenge we face."
