Fernando Alonso Dismisses Quick Fix as Adrian Newey Rumors Swirl Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso responds to speculation about an Adrian Newey announcement this week
"I'm not one to make excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, even as speculation persists about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who currently serves as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be free to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his next team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso commented, "Although there are still just rumors, I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to resolve the issues."
"It's about focusing on our current situation and ongoing projects. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn't, and use that insight to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso extending through the end of 2026. Additionally, they are collaborating with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to that point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major offensive in
"There’s nothing we can do," Alonso responded. "We are dependent on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
An inspired weekend like the one I'm experiencing now is sure to remain entirely anonymous.
Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished races very close to each other, usually within just two or three seconds, whether he is ahead or behind. This weekend was one of those times when I performed slightly better. I was pleased with the car and pushed it to its limits, maybe even over 100%, which earned me an 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four position. Those top teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, currently trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, I believe we have to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"McLaren progressed from being in last place to securing a podium finish within a span of four months. We have definite instances that demonstrate this improvement."
“Mercedes had a similar start to ours. We were on equal footing with them for the first four races, and they've already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will see better results in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is subpar and won't improve until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance fell short in Monza. It wasn't satisfactory in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"In my opinion, significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands what's going on. Everyone is working tirelessly. So, yes, we stay united and continue to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we almost secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
