Fernando Alonso Dismisses Adrian Newey Rumors, Calls for Team Effort Amid Aston Martin Struggles
Fernando Alonso addresses the "rumor" regarding an announcement about Adrian Newey this week
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso amidst Aston Martin's difficulties
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin may reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that Aston Martin could be his next team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just rumors and that solving issues isn't the responsibility of a single person.
"It’s about focusing on our current situation and what we are creating. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn’t, with the aim of better preparing for 2025."
Next year, Newey being available means he could take charge of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso that lasts through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our maximum effort each weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, such as this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
"Throughout this year, Lance and I have often finished races very close to each other, usually within two or three seconds apart, either with him ahead or me. This weekend, I happened to perform slightly better. I was pleased with the car's performance and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond, which resulted in an 11th place finish."
"Yes, it is disappointing. We must remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are leading and significantly ahead of us."
"Being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull is a sign that we need to improve our performance. We have to step up our game."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from last place to a podium finish within four months. We have concrete instances of such progress."
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. In the first four races, we were on par with them, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not inclined to make excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the car's current performance is inadequate and won't improve until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was lacking. It wasn't up to par in Zandvoort, Spa, or Hungary either."
"I don't anticipate significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on. We're all working very hard. So yes, we remain unified. We continue to strive. Last weekend earned us one point. Today we nearly got two points, and this is the fight we are in."
