Fernando Alonso Addresses Newey Rumors and Urges Team Improvement Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles
Fernando Alonso Responds to Speculation About Adrian Newey's Upcoming Announcement
Fernando Alonso expresses his disdain for excuses amid Aston Martin's challenges.
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just "one individual," amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's association.
Inside sources at the Monza circuit during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's recruitment in the coming days.
Newey, who currently serves as the chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year, at which point he will have the opportunity to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have faded.
"Actually, it's all just speculation at this point, and I believe it's not the responsibility of a single individual to make corrections," Alonso commented at Monza.
"Our focus is on our current assets and output. We aim to discern which initiatives are progressing positively and which are not, with the goal of optimizing our strategy for 2025."
Newey being free to work next year could enable him to supervise the development of a 2026 vehicle for a different company, possibly providing them with a significant edge as the new engine regulations take effect.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract extension for Alonso through 2026. They are collaborating with Honda to develop an engine compliant with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin ranks fifth in the team standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll came in 19th.
2025 could serve as a preparatory period before Aston Martin aggressively pursues its goals in 2026.
"We're powerless in this situation," Alonso responded. "Essentially, we're at the mercy of our team, and I believe both Lance and I are doing everything in our power to excel every weekend.
"During a motivational weekend, similar to this one I'm experiencing, I'm certain it will remain entirely unnamed."
This year, Lance and I have consistently been neck and neck, with only two or three seconds separating us at the race's conclusion, either ahead or trailing. This weekend, however, I managed to edge out slightly ahead, feeling quite pleased with the car's performance and pushing myself possibly beyond the 100% mark, landing me in P11.
"Clearly, there's a sense of letdown. It's crucial that we remain patient and keep in mind that our primary goal is set for 2026."
"However, I also believe that as a group, we might come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those are elite teams, and they have a significant lead on us."
"However, finding ourselves trailing behind Williams, Haas, and RB means it's time for us to step up our game. We have to improve."
Alonso commented on the upcoming year's vehicle, stating, "I believe there's still an opportunity for us to make adjustments."
"McLaren advanced from being in the last place to achieving a podium finish within four months, serving as a definitive illustration."
"Furthermore, Mercedes began on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will show any significant enhancement in the upcoming races.
"Alonso expressed his frustration, indicating that until there's an improvement to the vehicle, the current situation is inadequate and far from satisfactory."
Unsatisfactory performance in Monza, underwhelming in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary.
"Therefore, I believe significant alterations in Baku, Singapore, or Austin are unlikely unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what's happening. They're giving it their all. Indeed, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we managed to secure one point. Today, we nearly achieved two points, and that's the challenge we're facing."
