Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Faces Uphill Battle: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an upcoming announcement involving Adrian Newey
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's challenges, saying, "I don't like making excuses"
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be available to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin becoming his next team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that, at this point, everything is still based on speculation. He added that resolving the issues isn't a task for just one person.
"It's really about assessing our current situation and output. We need to identify what’s progressing well and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could supervise the 2026 vehicle for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They are teaming up with Honda to develop an engine that complies with upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory phase for Aston Martin, gearing up for a major offensive in
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We are reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are doing our utmost every weekend.”
"An inspired weekend, such as this one for me, will remain entirely anonymous, I’m sure."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have maintained a very close competition, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, whether ahead or behind. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt satisfied with the car's performance and pushed myself possibly beyond my limits, which resulted in securing the 11th position.
"Yes, it’s disappointing. We need to stay patient and remember that our main goal is in 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull means we need to step up our game. Improvement is essential."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, saying, “I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments.”
"McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Similarly, Mercedes began the season at the same level as we did. For the initial four races, we were on par with them, yet they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will see any progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current state is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Subpar performance in Monza. Below expectations in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team knows what's going on and is putting in maximum effort. We're staying together and continuing to push forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's the challenge we face."
