Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors as Aston Martin Faces Challenges: ‘We Need More Than Just One Man
Fernando Alonso Addresses Speculation About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
Fernando Alonso States, “I Don’t Believe in Excuses,” Amid Aston Martin's Challenges
Fernando Alonso asserts that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix implied that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently serving as the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be free to join and begin working with a competing Formula 1 team.
Whispers about Aston Martin potentially being his future team have intensified lately, while speculation about a possible move to Ferrari has subsided.
Speaking at Monza, Alonso mentioned that the information is still just hearsay and emphasized that addressing the issue isn't the responsibility of a single individual.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and ongoing projects. We need to identify what is progressing well and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being available next year means he could supervise the development of a 2026 car for a different team, potentially providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations are introduced.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has secured a new contract with Alonso that lasts until the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite discouraging.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“There’s nothing we can do,” responded Alonso. “We’re dependent on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving our all every weekend.”
"During an inspired weekend like this, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
“Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently been very close, often finishing within two or three seconds of each other, either just ahead or just behind. This weekend was one of those times where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed myself possibly beyond my limits, which resulted in an 11th place finish.”
“Absolutely, it’s disappointing. We must remain patient and recognize that the main goal is set for 2026.
"However, I believe the team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"Currently, being outperformed by teams like Williams, Haas, and Red Bull shows that we need to improve our performance. We have to elevate our standards and perform better."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
“Within just four months, McLaren went from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear examples.”
"Mercedes began the season just like we did. In the first four races, we were on par with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it seems improbable that Aston Martin will show better performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed frustration, stating that the current condition of the car isn't sufficient and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Fell short in Monza. Underperformed in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"In my opinion, significant changes won't occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain united and continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we were on the verge of securing two points, and this will be our ongoing challenge."
