Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
Fernando Alonso dismisses excuses as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than the efforts of a single individual, amidst ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Whispers around the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal Newey's recruitment in a matter of days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, after which he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have subsided.
"At Monza, Alonso mentioned that there are still just speculations and emphasized that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of one person."
"It's mainly about our current situation and what we're creating. It's about recognizing what's progressing well and what isn't, and making efforts to improve things for 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a crucial edge as the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a brand-new facility at Silverstone and has secured a contract with Alonso through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to that point, the outcomes have been quite disheartening.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his colleague Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a preparatory period for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
“We can’t do anything about it,” Alonso responded. “Basically, we rely on our team, and I believe both Lance and I are giving it our all every weekend.”
"During a weekend filled with inspiration, as this one has been for me, I am certain it will remain entirely confidential."
"This year, Lance and I have been very close in our races, often finishing just two or three seconds apart. Today was one of those weekends where I performed slightly better. I felt confident with the car and pushed it perhaps beyond its limits, which resulted in a P11 finish."
"Yes, it's frustrating. We have to stay patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. The leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and RB at this point means we have to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
"McLaren moved from being in last place to securing a podium finish in just four months. This provides us with clear instances."
"Moreover, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. During the initial four races, we were neck and neck with Mercedes, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not one to make excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will see any advancements in their performance in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the current state of the car is inadequate and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance in Monza was subpar. It was also lacking in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So, yes, we remain united. We continue to strive forward. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that will be our ongoing challenge."
