Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about an impending announcement involving Adrian Newey
"I don't believe in making excuses," says Fernando Alonso as Aston Martin faces challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues requires more than a single individual, amid ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin might reveal the signing of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing chief technology officer for Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year, at which point he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that his next move might be to Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential switch to Ferrari have diminished.
"Currently, it's all just speculation, and I believe it's not solely one person's responsibility to address the issues," Alonso mentioned while at Monza.
"It's really about our current situation and what we're creating. It's important to recognize what's progressing well and what isn't, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Adrian Newey being free next year means he could manage the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant resources into a new facility at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso extending through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulatory standards.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of progress for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do,” Alonso responded. “We’re reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"I can tell this weekend, much like my own, will go by without anyone noticing."
"This season, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's ahead or behind. Today was one of those times where I had a slight edge. I felt really good about the car and pushed it to its absolute limit, maybe even beyond. The result was finishing in P11."
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to stay patient and remember that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not being in contention for the top four spots. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being outpaced by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, it's clear that we need to elevate our performance. Improvement is necessary."
Alonso commented on the car for next year, stating, "I believe we still have time to make adjustments."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from the bottom position to securing a spot on the podium. This provides us with clear evidence."
“Additionally, Mercedes had a similar beginning to ours. For the initial four races, we were on par with Mercedes, and they have already secured three victories this season. Hence, I don't believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current performance won't improve until it receives an upgrade, and that the current situation is unacceptable.
"Performance at Monza was lacking. The same could be said for Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe there won't be significant differences in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"The strategy is set. The team understands the circumstances and is giving their all. We'll stay together and keep striving. Last weekend earned us one point, and today we nearly secured two points. This will be our ongoing challenge."
