Fernando Alonso Addresses Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin’s Ongoing Struggles
Fernando Alonso Addresses "Rumor" About Adrian Newey Announcement This Week
"I don’t believe in making excuses," Fernando Alonso comments as Aston Martin faces difficulties
Fernando Alonso asserts that solving Aston Martin's issues will require more than just a single individual, despite ongoing rumors connecting Adrian Newey to the team.
Sources inside the Monza paddock at the F1 Italian Grand Prix have indicated that Aston Martin may reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the current chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year and will then be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation that he might join Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just rumors, and I believe that it’s not solely one person’s responsibility to make improvements,” Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's more about our current situation and what we are creating. It's important to identify what is progressing correctly, what isn't, and to strive to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year means he could manage the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new facility at Silverstone and extended Alonso's contract through 2026. Additionally, they will team up with Honda to develop an engine that complies with the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth spot in the constructors' standings. Alonso secured 11th place at the Italian Grand Prix, while his teammate Lance Stroll finished in 19th position.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth for Aston Martin, setting the stage for a major push in
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso responded. “We’re relying on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend.”
"During a weekend full of inspiration, much like this one, I am certain that my involvement will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have often been very close in our races, usually finishing just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind. This weekend was an example where I performed slightly better. I felt good about the car and pushed it to its limits, possibly even beyond 100%, which resulted in me finishing in P11."
"Indeed, it’s disheartening. We must remain patient and recognize that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a spot in the top four. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us."
"We need to improve because currently, we're trailing behind teams like Williams, Haas, and Red Bull."
Alonso commented on the car for the upcoming year, stating, “I believe we still have enough time to make adjustments."
"McLaren went from finishing last to securing a spot on the podium in just four months. This serves as a clear example."
"Mercedes began the season just like we did. During the first four races, we were on par with them, but they have already secured three wins this year. Therefore, I don't believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, saying that the car's current performance is insufficient and will remain so until it receives an upgrade.
“Underwhelming performance in Monza. Below par in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary.
"I believe there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components."
"That's our strategy. The team is informed about what's going on. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we stay together. We keep striving. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly got two points, and that's where our fight lies."
