De Jong Miraculously Avoids Serious Injury in Terrifying GP2 Crash at Spa
De Jong avoids major injuries after terrifying GP2 crash
Daniël de Jong is reported to be awake and communicating after his frightening accident at Spa-Francorchamps during the GP2 feature race 1 on Saturday afternoon.
The MP Motorsports racer was attempting to overtake Pierre Gasly from DAMS during the fast stretch leading to Blanchimont at the beginning of the race when their vehicles collided wheel-to-wheel.
De Jong's vehicle was momentarily airborne at the front before losing control and crashing headfirst into the tire barrier. The front end of the car was deeply embedded in the barrier, and it took a while to safely remove de Jong from the wreckage.
A 23-year-old driver from the Netherlands was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Liège for a comprehensive medical evaluation.
