David Croft Takes a Break: Meet Harry Benjamin, His Replacement for the F1 Austrian Grand Prix
Why isn't David Croft providing commentary for the F1 Austrian Grand Prix? Who is Harry Benjamin?
Why is David Croft not commentating at this weekend's F1 Austrian Grand Prix, and who is taking his place, Harry Benjamin?
David Croft will be absent from the commentary booth for this weekend's race at the Red Bull Ring.
Since the 2012 Australian Grand Prix, Croft has consistently served as Sky's main commentator.
It was expected that he would not be present this weekend, as Croft had announced this before the season started.
Croft will take a break from the races in Imola, Austria, and Azerbaijan, with Harry Benjamin stepping in to cover those events.
The 53-year-old disclosed in February that he is eager to take a break, especially since he has an upcoming wedding.
In an interview with The Independent earlier this year, Croft remarked, “The focus is on maintaining freshness throughout the entire season. I'm not getting any younger.”
"I've made many sacrifices for my career, and now I want to dedicate some time to my family instead of being far away. I'm also getting married this year, so I need to plan the wedding!"
"However, I also have a desire to stay home and watch a race. I want to experience it for enjoyment. Perhaps I'll gain new insights by not providing commentary. Observing as a viewer might help me notice some details – I want to understand the perspective of the audience."
Who is Harry Benjamin?
Benjamin is a familiar face to Crash.net readers, as he has previously hosted the MotoGP podcast.
Throughout the years, he has provided commentary for Formula 2, Formula 3, and the Porsche Supercup, and he is presently serving as the F1 commentator for BBC 5 Live.
In 2023, Benjamin participated in the Sky Sports F1 broadcast aimed at children.
Anticipating his first appearance, Benjamin mentioned on the most recent Sky Sports F1 podcast episode, "I'm really thrilled. It's a significant challenge, but I'm eager for it."
"What an amazing place to achieve this, at Imola, and to be standing next to Karun as well. I feel truly honored."
Benjamin is scheduled to join former F1 driver Karun Chandhok at Imola, as Martin Brundle will be unavailable once more.
