Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash at Italian GP: ‘I Thought We Had Space
Daniel Ricciardo comments on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to incident involving Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after the first-lap incident between them during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo clashed with Hulkenberg during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza, while they were fighting for position in the middle of the pack at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he felt a collision. This contact pushed Hulkenberg's Haas off the track, causing him to lose a position to his teammate Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian racer received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race on home soil for the Red Bull team by finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we simply didn't have the speed today, even without considering the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space, but I felt the collision, so I didn't provide him with the necessary room and I said sorry.
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even tiny differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the full potential of the vehicle from Friday afternoon through to today."
"I personally feel much improved this weekend, and we came very near to earning points."
Tsunoda Left Disheartened
According to team member Laurent Mekies, the Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. A crash involving Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda ultimately brought an end to the Japanese driver's race.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, stating that it was disappointing his race ended just a few laps in due to a collision with Nico.
"I attempted to give as much room as I could, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
"Immediately, I noticed something was wrong and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to steer properly."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to perform strongly. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at those races."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"In today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to control the events, especially after Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Following that, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately resulted in us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki’s retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps, which would have helped us gain more insight into the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty since we did not properly carry out the initial one."
"We need to evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding overall this season."
