Close Call at Misano: Rider-less Moto2 Bike Crashes into Aprilia MotoGP Garage, Escapes Serious Injuries
Fortunate Avoidance as Moto2 Motorcycle Veers into Aprilia MotoGP Pits at Misano
A crash in the pit lane caused a Moto2 motorcycle to swerve into the Aprilia pit area.
During a strange event on Saturday morning at the San Marino Grand Prix, Moto2 racer Unai Orradre, a race official, and members of the Aprilia MotoGP team were lucky to avoid major injuries.
During the final practice session at Misano, Orradre's Forward Moto2 bike, which was without a rider, collided with the Aprilia pit garage following an incident in the pit lane.
Simon Crafar, a pit lane reporter for MotoGP.com, saw the incident happen.
"I witnessed an individual step off the pit wall, which is quite simple to do, and they didn't notice a motorcycle since a large group was departing at the start of the Moto2 session."
A man walked directly into the path of Unai Orradre, a rider from the Klint Forward Factory Team, causing Unai to be knocked off his bike by the individual who crashed into him.
"I was in disbelief. They were both fine; they stood up, walked away, and then took a seat."
However, his vehicle kept moving along the pit lane after he had dismounted, veered left, and crashed directly into Aleix Espargaro’s garage.
"The object struck Aleix's motorcycle, tearing off the entire side fairing. I believe it injured the hand of one of the Aprilia team members as it grazed them, before heading directly into the area where the data analysts and crew chiefs are located."
"Fortunately, no one was present since it wasn't the MotoGP session. It appears that everyone is safe."
Photographs revealed the Forward motorcycle lying on its side at the rear of the Aprilia pit area.
Aprilia informed Crash.net that their team members suffered no major injuries and admitted that the situation had the potential to be far more severe.
Orradre, who is believed to have had an incident with a marshal in the pit lane, did not participate in the last Moto2 practice session but returned for the qualifying round on Saturday afternoon.
