Jack Miller’s Misano MotoGP Sprint: Electronic Glitch Hands Marc Marquez the Advantage
Jack Miller: 'Marc overtook me when my bike malfunctioned' in Misano MotoGP Sprint
Jack Miller disclosed that a rare technical problem thwarted his attempts to fend off Marc Marquez in the San Marino Sprint race.
Jack Miller was aware that fending off Marc Marquez in the San Marino MotoGP Sprint race on Saturday would be a challenging endeavor.
Marquez began an uneven ninth position following a crash during qualifying, while Miller surged past the Aragon victor, advancing from 12th to 7th place in the first lap.
The Australian managed to hold off Marquez for half of the 13-lap race, but then the KTM rider encountered an unexpected electronic issue.
MotoGP bikes have distinct engine configurations set for every turn on a race track. Miller believes that his RC16 encountered confusion during the braking phase approaching Turn 8.
"As I changed the map while driving on the straight, I encountered a minor electronic problem," Miller remarked.
"As I approached the braking area for Turn 8, it seemed as though the system became disoriented."
"Halfway through the braking area, it engaged the engine brake fully. After that, it disengaged the clutch and nearly coasted before returning to normal."
"At that moment, Marc managed to move ahead."
"I felt like I was riding defensively and handling my braking points effectively to keep him at bay. Clearly, he was faster, but I was doing my best to maintain my position."
"Midway through the braking area, she made a ‘brmmm’ sound. It felt as if the mechanism was starting to seize up a bit."
"On several occasions, it seemed as though the throttle butterflies had fully closed. Then, sensing the extent of the rear wheel lock, it reacted very sharply."
"That caused me to veer slightly off course, leaving plenty of space for Marc to overtake me."
Miller held onto the eighth position, ending up slightly behind his teammate Binder and narrowly beating Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo.
Due to his initial defensive strategy, Miller encountered problems with front tire pressure that restricted his ability to switch to an offensive approach.
"Whenever I nearly caught up to Brad, I would experience some significant front tire locking," he remarked. "The high temperatures made it challenging, and maintaining a similar speed led to getting stuck in a certain rhythm, you might say."
“I had a great time. We made no errors and just aimed to stay in the game as long as we could with those guys. It was really enjoyable, and we were giving our all the entire time.”
