China’s Video Game Boom: Record 117 Games Approved in August 2024 Amid Black Myth: Wukong Craze, Signaling Major Recovery in Domestic Market
In August, China gave the green light to 117 video games, marking the highest approval in 2024, in the wake of the frenzy over Black Myth: Wukong. The country's National Press and Publication Administration has granted licenses to a cumulative total of 850 local games within the first eight months of the year.
The NPPA has granted licenses to 850 local titles in the initial eight months of this year, a noticeable increase from the 609 licenses issued during the same timeframe in 2023.
The substantial amount of games greenlit in August exemplifies the notable rebound in China's video gaming industry since April 2022. This was when Beijing recommenced authorizing games for the local market following an eight-month pause due to regulations.
