China’s Digital Leap: Internet User Base Nears 1.1 Billion, Fueled by Short Videos and Mobile Payments
The number of internet users in China is approaching 1.1 billion, propelled by the popularity of short video applications and mobile payment systems. Government research indicates that over one-third of China's new internet users in the first half of 2024 were attracted to brief video platforms.
The latest government statistics reveal that the number of internet users in China neared 1.1 billion by the end of June, marking an increase of 7.42 million since December. A myriad of online entertainment choices have attracted both the younger and older generations to become part of the world's biggest internet community.
As per a report published on Thursday by the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), a government agency, approximately 78% of residents in mainland China had internet access as of June. The report also indicated that over 37% of new internet users were attracted to apps that provide short video content.
The primary reasons for internet use in China were amusement and interpersonal interaction. Nearly 95% of Chinese internet users have watched short videos, which can be found on widely used platforms like ByteDance's Douyin, its competitor Kuaishou, and Tencent Holdings' versatile app WeChat.
Nearly half of the individuals who started using the internet in the initial six months of this year fell in the age bracket of 10 to 19 years, making up 49 percent of the total. Additionally, a significant portion, 36 percent, was constituted by people aged 50 and above.
