Charles Leclerc Cautions Ferrari: Monza Win Not a Guarantee for Sustained Success
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvements are ‘insufficient’ to ‘secure victories through the season’s end’
"Is it sufficient to ensure race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so at this point, but we have made significant progress in the right direction."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to regularly compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by utilizing a one-stop strategy, outpacing McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring the fact that McLaren possessed the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major upgrade package aimed at resolving their bouncing issues for the Italian Grand Prix.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to exercise caution.
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, I believe we've experienced the four toughest races of the season, mainly because Monaco suited our car's specifications at that moment. Monza is another track with its own unique characteristics."
"There were many straight sections and few turns. We also had a specialized rear wing for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we had another upgrade that I believe brought us closer to McLaren's performance, but I don't think it's sufficient for our car to dominate at other tracks for the remainder of the season."
"We certainly have much more to accomplish, but I'm thrilled to have achieved this in Italy."
Even though Leclerc has faced challenges since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers’ standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered the excitement, referencing similar discussions about contending for the championship after his victory in Monaco.
"We showed great performance this weekend, but the situation in Baku could be quite different, and Singapore will likely present another distinct challenge. Therefore, we need to recalibrate our approach. We managed to do that successfully from Monaco to Montreal, but as the transition from Monaco to Montreal demonstrated, there was a significant shift from one weekend to the next."
"We then experienced three or four of our toughest races of the season, simply because we were trying to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of really challenging races in the future, and I don't believe that will happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and external expectations remain reasonable and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that's simply not realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to secure race wins for the rest of the season? I don't believe so, but we have indeed made a significant improvement."
