Charles Leclerc Admits Overzealous Approach Cost Him in Austrian GP Qualifying
"Today, it got the better of me," said Charles Leclerc, acknowledging that he overextended himself during the Austrian Grand Prix F1 qualifying session, resulting in a mishap.
Charles Leclerc admitted that his strategy for qualifying in the Austrian Grand Prix didn’t succeed after he went off the track during his last attempt in Q3.
Leclerc couldn't better his time in his final qualifying lap, resulting in a sixth-place start on the grid.
The driver from Monaco initially secured a competitive time on worn soft tires, placing him fourth in the rankings. However, he fell to seventh place following a mistake-filled lap.
Leclerc first veered off course at Turn 6 and later repeated the mistake at the last two corners.
The Ferrari driver moved up to sixth place when Oscar Piastri's fastest lap, which would have placed him in third, was disqualified for exceeding track limits.
Looking back at the qualifying session, Leclerc commented, "It's really frustrating. When you know you have the capability to perform well but then make an error on your own, it always stings."
"It's not a catastrophe, though. Finishing in seventh place isn't ideal, but I believe third place was achievable today. In my final lap, I had excellent runs through Turns 1 and 3, clocking in two-tenths faster than my previous best. Unfortunately, I made an error in Turn 4. I pushed harder to regain time in Turn 6 but lost more ground. The same happened in Turn 9, where I tried to recover but ended up losing even more time."
"That's just how life is. I believe that taking that aggressive approach during qualifying benefited us more than it harmed us this year. Unfortunately, it backfired on me today. I'm understandably a bit upset, particularly because our team has faced some difficulties in the past two or three races, and I thought today was a chance for us to finish in the top three again."
“I didn’t perform well on the second lap, but my first lap on the scrubbed tire was excellent.”
In any case, Leclerc felt encouraged by Ferrari’s progress in the sprint race.
Leclerc managed to secure a seventh-place finish in the sprint race, having begun from 10th position because of an anti-stall problem during Friday's qualifying session.
Nonetheless, he couldn't advance past the initial lap.
He remarked that the situation appears more promising than it did this morning, as the new setup should slightly improve the race pace for tomorrow.
"Yes, I'm excited about it, and we'll find out what happens tomorrow."
