Carlos Sainz on the Verge of Decision: Audi or Williams for 2025?
Carlos Sainz remains uncertain about his choice between Audi and Williams, but assures a decision is imminent. The F1 driver discusses his future plans before the Spanish Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz has promised to decide on his future in Formula 1 "in the near future," acknowledging that he doesn't "want to delay it any further."
Carlos Sainz remains unsure if he will become part of the Audi team in 2025 or if he will transfer to Williams to race with Alex Albon.
The Spanish driver has taken his time in choosing which Formula 1 team he will race for next season, as he was anticipating that Red Bull might want to hire him to replace Sergio Perez.
Red Bull granted Perez a fresh two-year contract just before the Canadian Grand Prix.
Carlos Sainz had another possible opportunity with Mercedes, but it looks like they will go with Andrea Kimi Antonelli if Max Verstappen does not make an unexpected switch.
Discussing his plans for the future ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Sainz announced that he intends to make a decision shortly.
"A decision is expected imminently," he remarked. "I don't wish to delay any further. It's reached a stage where it's been occupying my thoughts for several weeks and even months."
"It’s clear that a decision needs to be made and it will happen shortly. We expect to have updates to discuss in the near future."
Sainz seems to have two distinct opportunities with Audi (which is currently Sauber) and Williams.
The existing Ferrari racer has the opportunity to sign a profitable contract with a carmaker, but in the near future, moving to Williams might be a wise decision due to the probable adaptability in his agreement with them.
Another element to consider is that Williams will be using the Mercedes power unit in 2026. With the introduction of new engine regulations, this could be advantageous for the Grove-based team.
"I haven't made up my mind yet," Sainz explained. "I'm still talking it over with my team and exploring ideas."
"I need to spend a few days at home. Before the Spanish Grand Prix, I was at home, but my mind was focused on the race. The weeks following the Canadian Grand Prix have been incredibly busy, leaving me no time to make any decisions. In the coming weeks, I plan to take the time to address this."
