BMW Concept Skytop: Eleganz und Kraft vereint in einer Hommage an Z8 und 503 am Comer See
BMW Concept Skytop: A Tribute to Z8 and 503
Concept design for the annual beauty contest at Lake Como
Lake Como in Italy serves as the backdrop for the annual Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, a pageant for classic cars and motorcycles. Since 1929, with an intermittent hiatus of 40 years, this event has been a convergence of natural beauty and automotive design and engineering excellence.
The focus is primarily on the unique vintage cars. Newly minted auction victors, armed with their hefty cash briefcases, are a common sight here. Additionally, concept vehicles, design models, and prototypes receive annual accolades. Last year's victor was the Pagani Huayra Codalunga.

This year, BMW is presenting a two-seater concept design at the Villa Elba gathering that draws inspiration from the Z8 and 503 models. The front of the vehicle is not only notable for its slender headlights. These LED units are the thinnest automotive headlights currently available and were specially crafted for this concept.
The horizontally stretched, illuminated BMW grille catches the eye with its delicate elegance rather than a monstrous appearance. In fact, this combination harkens back to the front end of the Z8, but with a sharp, shark-nose design minus the prominently protruding 'bug eyes'. These nods to the iconic service vehicle of 007, the legendary roadster BMW Z8, are intentionally selected.
BMW describes the expression of their chosen design as "fluid, sporty-elegant, and at the same time, athletically muscular." On the other hand, the curvaceous and expansive sideline harks back to the elegance of a 503, presented in an elongated, power-packed version.
Adrian van Hooydonk, the head of BMW Group Design, comments on the Concept Car, stating, "The BMW Concept Skytop presents a distinctive and exotic design that aligns with the heritage of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It delivers a fusion of driving dynamics and sophistication that is unparalleled." Some onlookers, however, might find it reminiscent of a type of 8 Series Targa.

The design lines are intended to guide the volume of the vehicle in a controlled manner towards the rear. Integrated winglets take the place of traditional door handles on the doors. The alloy wheels feature delicate slats around the spokes. BMW's paint specialist has put a lot of effort into the rear finish, where the reddish-brown hue used for the roof seamlessly transitions into a silver with a "chrome shadow effect."
The BMW ConceptSkytop features a leather-covered roll bar behind its two seats, enhancing the vehicle's interior design. Additionally, it includes side fins, a fully retractable window, and leather-covered roof panels that can be stored in the luggage compartment, completing the overall aesthetic.

The interior continues the theme with a reddish-brown hue. The seats feature a straight, wide Budapest design, which will undoubtedly complement the fashion of those visiting Villa Elba. This is further accentuated by a few crystal embellishments.
Beneath the hood, similar to the Z8, there's a V8 engine at play. BMW has kept specifics under wraps, only mentioning that it's currently their most powerful version. It's likely the same V8 found in the 8 Series, which boasts 625 horsepower.
